To Pack a Stadium, Provide Video Better Than TV

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — How do you keep football fans as regular visitors to stadiums when the television coverage of every play is so good?

For the Giants and the Jets, the answer, perhaps surprisingly, is more and better video than people can get at home. This season, the New Meadowlands Stadium will offer fans free smart-phone applications that they can glance at to see video replays, updated statistics and live video from other games — and that will work only inside a stadium.

Over the next few years, stadium officials say, the applications will provide fans with statistics on the speed of players and the ball, and fantasy games that will allow them to pick players and compete against other fans.

A real-life game no longer seems to be enough.

The Math Changes on Bulbs Modern LEDs, While Expensive, Save Companies on Labor

How many workers does it take to change a light bulb? Not as many as it used to.

And that is what’s making the difference in getting companies like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., GNC Corp. and Caesars Entertainment Corp. to shell out for advanced new lights.

How many workers does it take to change a light bulb? Not as many as it used to. And that — not energy savings — is what’s making the difference in getting companies to shell out for advanced new bulbs. Kate Linebaugh has details on Lunch Break.
Bulbs built around light-emitting diodes—semiconductors that produce bright light when zapped with electricity—last 10 times longer than conventional bulbs, meaning fewer ladders blocking frozen-food aisles or unsightly scaffolds towering in hotel lobbies as workers change blown-out bulbs. With energy savings not yet enough in some cases to cover the higher cost of the new bulbs, it’s lower maintenance costs that are getting sales across the finish line.

Samsung lights up new line of LED bulbs

Samsung today announced the availability and pricing of a line of seven consumer LED bulbs, some of which have the conventional screw-in bottom. There are spotlights for recessed lighting cans or track lighting, but there is also a bulb-shaped A19 bulb, a “snowcone” style bulb that gives off light in one direction.

“A light bulb is no longer just a light bulb. It’s a digital technology made up of LED chips, drivers, and electronics–familiar turf for Samsung,” Kevin Dexter, Samsung’s senior vice president of home appliances, said in a statement.

Prices start at just under $20 and go up to almost $60 for a bright halogen replacement spot light. Like all LED lights, they are designed to have a life of 30,000 or 40,000 hours, which can be in the range of 20 years depending on usage. Their power consumption is about one-quarter that of incandescent or halogen lights, according to Samsung.

LED lighting

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are a solid-state light source that has unique properties that make it ideal for efficient and solar powered lighting applications. Although most people think of LEDs as indicator lighting, one type of LEDs is specifically designed for general illumination applications.

As the technology has become more robust, reliable and efficient, LED lighting is becoming more commonplace in everyday life. LEDs for illumination, when properly integrated into a light fixture, or luminaire, should achieve over 80 lumens per watt of efficiency (7x more efficient than a light bulb) and a life of over 60,000 hours (> 12 years). The technology means that in more and more applications the light source lasts as long as the light fixture!

Sol exclusively uses LEDs as the source for illumination in our street, parking lot and area lighting systems. The reason for using LED lies in the basic physics of the device. LEDs:
